Avoid the Holi-Daze: 5 Steps to Build Momentum into the New Year
The holidays can be exhilarating! For some, it can also be a stressful season.
Even if we love this time of the year it can be overwhelming. There’s a lot of pressure to have the “perfect” holiday.
There’s a lot of comparison. Stop looking at social media and thinking that others have it better.
The reality is we don’t know what’s going on in someone else’s life.
Instead of sleepwalking through this holiday season. Stop tuning out. Stop numbing out. Instead let's survive and THRIVE this holiday.
Step 1: Boost Your Self-Care
You can’t do anything well unless you take good care of YOU. The biggest mistake I find my clients making is prioritizing themselves LAST.
This never works. Mothers can’t be amazing parents if they are burning themselves out. Business owners can’t lead well if they aren’t staying healthy and energized.
And yet, we tend to make our needs the last priority.
During the holidays, it’s even more important to take care of ourselves.
Make an appointment at the spa. Take 20 minutes each morning for meditation or a bath. Go on a hike in nature. Make a date with your partner.
Do whatever makes you feel great. Prioritize it FIRST. This will give you the baseline you need to navigate the holiday joys and stressors.
Otherwise, you will find yourself snapping. You will have less patience. You may even get sick.
Choose again. Choose YOU. You’ve got this!
Step 2: Keep It Simple
The holidays are overwhelming. You have holiday parties that compete with quality family time.
There’s the decorating. The gift shopping. The traditions each family holds. The list goes on and on.
Sit down with your family and select which traditions are most important. Schedule those first.
Consider making gift exchange simple. With my siblings we only buy gifts for the children and not the adults.
Say no to obligations that aren’t priorities with your family and your values. You can’t do it all. But you can do everything that’s most important to you.
I believe that you will enjoy the holidays much more if you keep it simple.
Find the few traditions that mean the most and be present in those moments. You will create memories beyond any expectations you may have held.
Step 3: Be Present
Be in the moment. Release any expectations you may have.
When you don’t have expectations, it’s hard to be disappointed.
It is easy to feel overwhelming moments of joy when you let go. Stop expecting. Get into the flow.
The best gift you can give anyone you love is your undivided attention.
Put the cell phones away. Stop the day dreaming. Be with your loved ones.
Be in the moment. Listen and give all of yourself to them.
Step 4: Reflect & Be Grateful
As we head into the winter, this is a great time for reflection. Make space to reflect on everything you are grateful for.
Make a list of everything you appreciate. Everyone you are grateful to have in your life. All the successes and wins you had from this past year.
Then reach out and text, call or write a letter to everyone on your gratitude list. Tell them what they mean to you and why you appreciate them.
Reconnect with them. Be authentic and genuine.
Share your gratitude list with your loved ones. Share it with your business community and tribe. Encourage them to make their own gratitude list.
One of the most powerful things about gratitude is that you can’t feel any negative emotions.
When you are in gratitude you become grateful and it feels amazing!
Step 5: Get Motivated for 2021!
